I have had for years, the quest to find the
perfect burrito. I have had many, good
and bad. Some have had good burritos, but bad chips, or good chips, bad
burrito and bad salsa And some places actually have
the nerve to charge you for chips, something that should be complimentary. I am a sucker for homemade chips, and
homemade salsa. They can make or break a burrito shops rating. I, also being a
vegetarian, have to rate places on what options they have available for
non-meat eaters. Basically, no place has been perfect yet. I started this web
page to let people know which taquerias to eat at and
which ones to avoid.
If you are a meat eater, Scroll down to guest reviewer Jorge’s meat reviews….

Sad to say this
place was a victim of the
economic crash… no longer in business.
So far, the
best burritos I have had in the Bay Area are: pancho
villa, El castillito
Most recently reviewed: gorditos
Worst burritos so far: el faro, 360* gourmet, luna azul
Best chips: pancho villa,
Anita’s, los primos
Best salsa: taqueria azteca, Anita’s, pancho villa
Okay here are
the reviews:
Aldabertos (
This place kind of reminded me of how taco bell was before it was
owned by pepsi. Remember those days? When it was
actually pretty good? And, it wasn’t quite as bad for you. In fact there was a
time where taco bell was the lesser of all the evil
fast foods. Those days are gone forever. Anyways, adalbertos
was like a taco bell that looked like a real taqueria.
The burrito itself wasn’t horrible, it was small, but
pretty cheap. They had whole beans and refried beans, store bought chips and
salsa that was actually good and pico salsa that was
homemade. So it was almost like a taqueria, but
tasted closer to old school taco bell. Which is actually
pretty good. Sorry if this review made no sense, I am half asleep at
this moment….
Anita’s taqueria (railroad ave.,
It’s
an authentic Mexican style restaurant, burrito was very good, slightly costly,
(over 6 bucks) and they had homemade chips and salsa. It was definitely a knife
and fork burrito, huge messy and filling. Service was okay, a little slow but
they were understaffed when I was there. This place has awesome margaritas too.
Baja
Fresh
(chain store, they are every where) B
Not
bad, they don’t use any cans, MSG or microwaves, everything is fresh, fresh
homemade chips, many different salsas to choose from, (I would avoid the Baja
salsa it tastes like soy sauce.) I usually combine the red hot stuff with the pico, as usual the pico tastes
better but isn’t hot enough. Combined, they taste pretty damn good. The veggies
are grilled so they are a bit greasy. They don’t put rice in the burritos so
you need to ask for that. The service is a bit slow since everything is made to
order. This place has my favorite chips, sometimes that is enough to get me
there. Be careful ordering the veggie stuff though, they do use the same grill
and some times you may get a nasty chunk of beef in it….
Canceria consequtio taqueria (
Burrito
was very good and cheap, but they did not offer chips and salsa. This forced
the lower rating. Service was not very good, and they didn’t have much for
vegetarians to enjoy. They did offer
whole beans, but didn’t have a vegetarian burrito offered on the menu so, you
pretty much have to order creatively. The place is in a mini-mart and you have
to go to the mini-mart portion to get your drinks. I didn’t like that, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Burrito was pretty big, required a knife and fork.
Cancun (
Right
next to the bart station.
Burrito was decent, under 4 bucks and a decent size; they did have black beans
but not a lot of vegetarian items. The chips and salsa were free. The chips
were store bought, but not horrible though. They were thicker style chips. The
salsa came in a container too small to dip the chips into, and was definitely
store bought. Tasted kind of sweet, reminded me of sweet & sour. The
service was ok, but it is worth it to walk the extra block to
Castillito (mason & market SF) B
Better
than el charro was when it occupied this location,
but the chips still suck. They still offer a choice of tortillas and beans.
Prices are still the same. The salsa is no longer homemade but was not too bad
for something from a jar. Green salsa is the guacamole style,
the red was a jarred pico style.
Chavo’s (SF) B
Not
bad, but not anything to get real excited over. They have lots of options for
vegetarians, black beans and whole beans. Store bought chips, (but they are
free) and, homemade salsa. Store hours are really bad. I haven’t been there in
so long, I am not really sure if they are still in business. ……thanks to a
friendly email from Ben, I was informed that this place is still open, but the
hours still suck….
Chipotle (chain store, everywhere) C
This
place had too much of an American style. I was sick for 2 days after eating
there. Burrito was under 5 bucks, and they make it however you want it. The
rice just wasn’t right, it tasted too much like Chinese rice, and I think
that’s what made me ill. I don’t like to mix ethnicities. Chips are store
bought, and are very salty. They also charge you for them. But the salsa is
very good. Service is good too.
Dos
Amigos (Geary
St. SF) B
Good
price for a decent burrito. They only thing that was strange was that there
were cucumbers in the veggie burrito. I have never had cucumbers in a burrito
before, and wasn’t expecting it to be good. There were plenty of vegetarian
options, black beans, whole beans offered. They had homemade chips (free) and
yummy homemade salsa. The service was fast & friendly.
El
Balazo(San Ramon, SF) B-
Where
do I start with this place? Well, the burrito itself is not too bad. The price
is under 4 bucks, plenty of vegetarian options, complimentary chips (store
bought) good salsa. BUT, the service sucks and the employees talk shit about
you in Spanish while they are making your food. If you know Spanish and don’t
look it, try giving your order in espanol. Wait till
after they talk shit about you though, then watch the
look on their faces. They will make your burrito quick and PHAT….
I
went to a new el balazo in hacienda business park in
El
castillito (Livermore, SF) A-
Great
burrito, every burrito is under 4 bucks. Veggie is under 3. Whole beans
offered, no black beans. Steamed tortillas not grilled, so it’s really hot when
you get it. Store bought chips, complimentary, bottomless, variety of homemade
salsas. Service is fast and friendly.
EL
Charro(mason st
@market) B
Not as good as la trampa, which occupied this same location. I was thoroughly disappointed. Burrito isn’t quite as big, but the price is about the same, (between 5 and 6 bucks) the chips are no longer homemade, are store bought and stale. They still offer different tortillas, black & whole and refried beans. They used round tomato slices instead of pico and I thought that was just odd, especially when you add the hot salsa. just too tomatoey. (still not sure if that’s even a word) …update…once again changed names…. See castillito
El
Chorizo/Chile Verde (
Not
the best burrito I have had, but far from the worst. Its 50 feet away from a
Cancun, maybe 100, I will choose Cancun over this place every time. Low price,
offers black beans, store bought chips, complimentary, store bought salsa (only
the green kind. ewww.)
El coyote junction (
Here
I had a big freekin burrito. They were medium priced
and they had vegetarian options, homemade chips, bottomless, and home made
salsa. Yum! What I liked about this
place though was that there is a huge cantina portion of the restaurant with a
huge dance floor. They told me they have dj dancing
on Friday and Saturday nights… they also had a mariachi band that plays on
Sunday afternoons while you are eating. This can be annoying or interesting
depending on how you look at it. Good service and you can eat at the bar. I
avoided the mariachi band by eating in the bar. Oh yeah and the burrito, fuckin rocked.
El
Faro (junipero serra,
SO.SF) D
By
far, the worst burrito I have had. It was awful. Price was decent, vegetarian
options but they don’t offer black or whole beans. How many times do I need to
express that carrots do not belong in a burrito? This place also had big slices
of bad tomatoes. Ewww, I will stay away… Store bought
chips, and salsa from a jar. Eww, eww ewww.
El
Gallo
(Santa Rita rd.,
Burrito
itself was not bad. They used whole pinto beans instead of refried. They didn’t
offer black beans. It came with fresh lettuce, and the tortilla was steamed not
grilled. The price was decent, under 5 bucks for a medium sized burrito. They
did not give me chips, I am not sure if they charge you for them or not. I
wasn’t in the mood to be asking. Next time, I will inquire about that. The pico style salsa was very good, hot red salsa was kind of
gross. As far as the service, well that was one of the reasons I wasn’t in the
mood to ask about the chips. It seemed to be young kids with no adult
supervision and not really wanting to be too customer friendly. The service
wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t all that great.
I would definitely go there again, but I wont
go out of my way.
EL
Gorditio (old
Here
is the closest to perfect so far. YUM! Vegetarian burrito costs 5 bucks, but
it’s huge. The chips are store bought but you get a sealed bag and it’s pretty
big. They have homemade salsa that is very good, and decent service.---- sad to say this place went out of business 10/04----
El
Gran Taco
(Broadway, SF) B-
Sometimes,
the best burritos are in the places that look like the worst. I avoided this
place for months. I thought this place looked like it was a shit hole. Right
smack in between strip clubs, it is a well-hidden secret in the red light
district. When I needed new places to review, I figured I would hit this place.
One of the best burritos I have had. It’s under 5
bucks, and, there are vegetarian options. But they charge you for chips (store
bought), and they charge you for salsa. Sometimes chips are free, I guess
that’s if you go on the right day. There is a language barrier so you may want
to give your order carefully.
El
Graneo de oro (
This
place is primarily a grocery store for Mexican food, so they have fresh
homemade everything. The prices ranged from 4- 6 bucks for the burritos. There
is a good selection for vegetarian items and they do offer black beans, whole
beans and refried beans. The burrito was pretty damn good, and pretty big. The
salsa they put in the burrito had a very unique taste, one that stays with you
for a day or two and you want it again. It’s the “crack” for burritos. The
chips you had to pay for so I did not try them this time. Service was pretty
good, fast and friendly.
El
Lorito (
More
of an authentic style, pretty good, under 5 bucks and it’s pretty big.
Vegetarian options, whole beans offered, chips are
complimentary, store bought but restaurant style. Salsa was nasty, tasted like
marinara sauce. (Not good on chips) ---- went out of
business----- 10/04..…. It is now a La Tapitita
Fillmore café and mexican grill (fillmore
& geary SF) B-
Many
veggie options, serves black beans, every burrito is about 6 bucks, and they do
give you decent store bought chips and homemade salsa. My only real complaint
is that the burritos come in spinach tortillas. I prefer flour or wheat. You
can get these if you ask. The fresh
veggie burrito had weird veggies in it. Not just your usual lettuce, tomato and
guac. Broccoli
was in there. Weird for me but, it didn’t taste horrible, just different. Also,
the place is run by Asians. Not that that’s a bad thing I just don’t know if
it’s worse than having a white boy making my burrito. Al things considered, the people are very
friendly and it’s nice to have a burrito within walking distance of the fillmore. So next time you’re
waiting for a show, give it a try.
Gorditos (the
one I went to was inside thunder valley casino, in
So
the burrito itself was just “ok”. Whole
beans instead of refried, rice inside, lettuce, sour cream and guac. The chips were
store bought but were the good kind. You know, the kind that if put under a
heat lamp could pass for homemade? The salsa was the runny homemade style of pico. But, probably came from a jar. They had plenty of
options for non-carnavores, and did not charge for
chips. Prices weren’t outta hand but hard to judge,
since this particular location was inside a casino.
The
only thing that really caused the lower score was the fact that I had to make 3
trips to the toilet before an hour passed. Don’t know why but the burrito did
not like me.
Not really a fancy restaurant, from the outside it looks fancy, to much open space on the inside. Almost like a denny’s or diner type place. But, on to what’s important… burrito was huge, and only 6 bucks, but… they only offered refried beans I tasted so few in the burrito I wasn’t sure they put them in. all I could taste was lettuce. Chips were free, thick homemade style. Salsa was runny style, and, too tomatoey… if that’s a word…and a bit too much black pepper. But, the more chips you ate, the more you didn‘t notice. Service was a bit slow.
La
Burrita (Berkeley) B+
Less
than 4 bucks will buy you a tasty burrito. This place has its own unique taste
and you will crave it after eating there.
They have plenty of items for vegetarians and offer black beans. Chips
are homemade, bottomless and complimentary. The salsa is not homemade, but the
green stuff is actually decent here. Red stuff was kind of gross. The service
was friendly and fairly quick.
La
Fiesta taqueria (
So far, the best I have had since living in sac. Good prices, from 5-6 bucks, lots of veggie options including black and whole beans. Complimentary, bottomless chips (although they are bought and not homemade), a variety of tasty salsa, and awesome tasting burritos. What I really liked about the burrito at this place was the sour cream. I don’t know what brand they used but, the sour cream tasted fresh and they didn’t pile it on. And it tasted awesome.
La
Fuerta (Livermore) D (I think they may have changed
their name….)
Although
this place is more authentic, something was not right. The cost was way too
expensive for what the taste warranted. It was on the gross side. A knife and
fork were necessary to eat this burrito. It was messy. There were no vegetarian
items on the menu, only refried beans offered. The chips were store bought, but
not bad. Salsa was terrible, tasted like ketchup. The service could have been
better.
Good,
burritos under 5 bucks, veggie items offered, black
beans and whole beans. Homemade, complimentary chips (but they were overcooked)
salsa was good, homemade and HOT. Friendly service but it’s
smack in the middle of da ghetto.
La
piñata (
Huge,
Huge, Huge… not the cheapest but you can get the super size for a couple bucks
more and you have your next two meals covered. Black, whole or refried beans
are offered. The chips are homemade but usually are over cooked so they aren’t
that good. The salsa is homemade runny style, and pretty yummy. Service is
sometimes slow because they are usually pretty busy, but they are open late and
serve awesome margaritas.
LA
Quinta
(mission st. SF) A-
Maybe it’s because I haven’t been eating burritos
lately, but yesterday I had one of the best burritos ever. This burrito was freekin’ huge and costed me 4
bucks. When I asked they told me they
only had refried beans, but it wasn’t bad because the refried were more like
whole pinto beans so it lacked that lard feel… they serve them wet, but even if
they didn’t, you would not be able to pick it up. Definitely a fork required.
They had homemade chips, and even though they were overcooked, they still
tasted pretty damn good. The salsa was the hot runny style, homemade. It was
very good, not too hot but not mild. The service was a bit slow but it was worth it….
La
Salsa
(chain store, everywhere) B-
Burritos
aren’t bad, but I think I had the worst burrito mess ever in this place, when I
bit into my burrito and it busted open on the bottom. Black bean juice went
everywhere, and rice all in my lap.
Price is low, under 5 bucks. They don’t have many vegetarian options,
chips are homemade style but store bought. They have many different varieties
of salsa and most of them are good. Try the mango salsa for something
different.
La
Tapitita (
Good
burrito, under 5 bucks, but they didn’t have too many vegetarian options. They
did offer whole beans, but no black,
Chips
and salsa were not offered. Good and friendly service.
La
Taqueria (SF) B-
Burrito
was basically good, but it was a bit small for the 6 bucks it costed. They do have a vegetarian burrito on the menu, however they do not offer black beans. Whole beans are
fine with me. The burrito was a bit under stuffed, making it kind of flimsy and
hard to hold in your hand without making a huge mess. Would have been great
with some rice, but they don’t put rice in their burritos. The chips were store
bought but not bad, they do charge you for them. The salsa though: yummy pico, hot, fresh, and homemade. I want to try this place
again so I can be sure. I have heard too many good things about it and this
review isn’t what I have heard….
La
Trampa (
Burrito
was very filling, low priced and huge. There were many options for vegetarians,
black beans and whole beans offered. They also offer a variety of tortillas.
They had thick restaurant style chips, possibly store bought, but still good.
Salsa was yummy homemade pico. They did have Quick
and friendly service. This place is under new ownership/ management and is no
longer La trampa…..L it is now
EL charro……please see el charro
for a review…….
Los Amigos (Springtown blvd,
The
menu here very much resembled that of Los Primos, but
the prices seemed a bit more for most items, it also does not have the luxury
of being open 24/7. As far as the
breakfast burritos, I liked. Not too greasy, just about right on the cheese to
grease factor. The prices were okay, around 4-5 bucks. Bean and cheese burritos
are about 3 bucks. I had the veggie burrito. I was disappointed. It reminded me
so much of a 7-layer burrito from taco bell, I could not finish. It was not horrible, but when I go to a taqueria and pay 4 bucks for a burrito, I do not want
something as wretched as taco bell. They did however have awesome chips, you
can get a big bag for a buck, but sometimes they give you small bags with your
burrito. They also had decent salsa. Not the best, but just okay. No black
beans offered, just refried.
Los
Calipores (
Burrito
was pretty good and filling. Most burritos there are under 5 bucks and huge.
Vegetarian items offered, black beans and whole beans. They serve
complimentary, store-bought chips, and yummy hot pico
salsa. Service was decent.
Los
Metatas (colma) B
I
used to eat at this place every day when I worked down the street in colma, (the only decent burrito in that area) I hadn’t been
there in years, and happened to be in that neighborhood. Of course, I had to
get my burrito fix. The place has changed, they no longer have black beans, but
they do serve whole beans, and they have a lot vegetarian items on the menu.
The chips are store bought, and aren’t very good. They did add the luxury of a
self-serve salsa bar. The salsa bar has 4 different kinds: pico
(good), green (gross), hot (runny style, not bad) and medium (gross). The
burrito was not bad but the cheese was strange, it was chunks instead of grated
and it didn’t feel to good in my stomach.
Los
pericos (
Good
and cheap. Not very big, but for under 3 bucks you can
get a bean and cheese burrito. The vegetarian is under 4. Plenty
of vegetarian options but no black beans, just whole or refried. Chips
are free, store bought, but good quality. Plenty of salsas to choose from in a
self serve salsa bar. Stay away from the green stuff. It was nasty, but the pico was pretty damn good.
The
service was pretty fast.
Los
primos (Vasco rd,
Not
a whole lot of vegetarian options but for a burrito shop that is inside a gas
station, I would have to say it’s pretty damn good. Chips are homemade, but
cost a buck. They are good and you get a huge bag. They are thin, crisp, &
salty. The salsa is homemade and free. There are 3 different types of salsa and
they are all good. (I like to mix the pico style with
the hot) Burritos are between 5 and 6 bucks and are pretty big, except they
only have refried beans. (And that combined with the guacamole, look out! drive
with the window down!) This is a well kept secret in Livermore, one of the best
burritos in town.
Los
Super Burrito
(SF) B
About
5 or 6 bucks will buy you a decent burrito that is pretty big. They have
vegetarian items, and offer whole beans. They have store bought chips, with a
bottomless supply and home made pico style salsa.
They are open late, and the service is pretty good.
Los
Veraquos grill (
This
place is more of a grill, and not really a taqueria.
Burrito was very good, with grilled vegetables. It was also very expensive.
However, they do serve them with beans and rice on the side. The chips are
homemade and very yummy. The salsa is the runny style, homemade and hot.
Service is a little bit slow. This place is great if you have the extra money
and the time.
Luna
auzul (Metreon, SF) D
Where
do I start? The burrito was disgusting, overpriced and they only had refried
beans. I had the grilled veggie, normally this would be good, but here it came
with refried beans. Grilled veggies just don’t work with refried beans. It’s
too much fat and grease. Lets just say, I made about 6
trips to the toilet within an hour after eating here. It costed
me 8 bucks and it was not worth it. The chips were over cooked. The salsa was
gross. That’s all I can say. It was just nasty.
Palapas Taco bar (Pine St, SF) B+
Let
me start by saying, this was the first time in a long time where I did not
finish my burrito. It was just under 6 bucks, and it was fucking huge. They
offer black, whole, and refried beans, a variety of tortillas and, there are
plenty of vegetarian items on the menu. I ate the sautéed vegetable
burrito. The chips you had to pay for.
They use all different kinds of tortillas for them. The chips were too thick
and over cooked. They were so big that the bag of chips you paid 75 cents for
had only about 5 chips in it. As for the salsa, they had four different
varieties.1) mild (tomato salsa. It was pretty good) 2) medium,
(red runny style.) 3) fiery hot, (I didn’t try this kind, because it was
green and I have had bad experiences with green salsa). 4) Very hot (red
runny style but it really wasn’t that hot.) as far as the service goes, they
aren’t open past 3 pm, so that kind of sucks. They are really busy at the lunch
hour, but they work very fast and the line moves quickly. While you are waiting
in line, you can sample the chips for free. Overall, this was a great burrito
experience, not too expensive and a huge, tasty, and filling burrito. I just
think the chips could have been better.
Poncho
villa (16t
& mission, SF) A
I
have been craving a burrito ever since eating here. This is the first burrito
in SF that I think may be better than
Qdabos (eight mile rd,
I
was driving home from
Ricos (
I
liked this place because of the originality of the items on the menu. They did
have the regular stuff, you know, beef, chicken, and veggie burritos, but they
also had other options. Such as, what I had ordered, the popeye
burrito. The popeye consists of: black beans, rice,
Spinach, marinated mushrooms and salsa. You can pay extra and get beef or
chicken added. The prices weren’t too bad, the bean and rice burrito was $3.95
(add a dollar for sour cream or extras.) Popeye was 5.95, the meat burritos
were about the 6.95 (this is what gave it the A-) chips were homemade and free.
The salsa was not the best, the red stuff tasted too much like that you would
purchase in a store, I couldn’t tell if it was homemade or store bought. The
green stuff wasn’t too bad, that’s saying a lot coming from me, I normally don’t even bother tasting the green stuff. You
definitely need a fork and knife with the burritos here, its big enough to fill
you up and make a mess, yet is small enough to finish. Service was a bit slow.
One
of the best I have had in a long time, but simce I
haven’t been in a burrito mood lately, it may not be saying much. But it was
damn good. Burrito was medium priced most ranged from 5-6 dollars. They serve
whole, black or refried beans. A variety of homemade salsa, the pico was very good, the hot was more of a picante style it wasn’t so great on the chips but awesome
on the burrito. I didn’t try the green. The chips were store bought, but you do
get a good size basket and it’s complimentary. Burrito was served fast, was a
decent size and evenly stuffed, with Each flavor
coming through at the same time. Yum!
Taqueria Azteca (Amador plaza rd,
Not
authentic style, they taste how burritos taste when white guys are running the
restaurant. (We just can’t seem to get it right ya
know?) The burritos are good though. The
Veggie veggie is stuffed with all sorts of fresh
vegetables. Burritos are under 5 bucks, and are huge. (and
that’s not even the super size) There are tons of vegetarian options, black
beans and whole beans offered. Store bought chips, but the supply is
bottomless. They have a bunch of different homemade salsas to try. (I recommend
the screamer salsa.) Service is very friendly.
Taqueria cansuelito (Vasco rd,
Huge, vegetarian was 4 bucks. Meat burritos are 5. Whole beans offered (no black), the cheese was weird though. It was chunks, crumbled. Kind of like the feta or blue cheese chunks you would find in a salad, but it was regular jack cheese. The chips were 75 cents for a basket, a pretty big basket, but they were store bought and not the best. The salsa was not bad, runny style medium hot. I was glad to discover this place. The burrito I had there was definitely one of the better in the middle of suburban Hicksville of Livermore.
Taqueria el zorro (
Yummy
burrito, low priced (under 5 bucks) many vegetarian
options, including black beans, are offered. The grilled veggie has a unique
taste, if you are in the mood for a different taste in a burrito; the regular
veggie is also good. Chips are store bought, and they charge you. Salsa is very
good, homemade and there are a few different choices. The pico
style is really good, even the hot green stuff is good. They are open late at
night, which is great for me, if I am hungry at 2 am I can get a
burrito………..Update 12/05… they switched from the homemade salsa to the store
bought kind. It’s not very good.
Taqueria express (
One of the better burritos I have had in a long
time, very unique tasting. I think this was due to the marinated veggies. The
vegetarian burrito has: marinated veggies, rice, salsa and beans. Cheese sour
cream and guacamole are extra. Cost: $3.50. The meat burritos are $5.25. They
offer black, whole or refried beans. Chips are round store bought chips. I
didn’t try the salsa because they charged for this. $1.00.
There is a language barrier when ordering so service may be a bit slow, but I
would definitely go here again. Update 3/20/06… name has been changed… will
update with more info later…
Taqueria Vallerta (Lathrop) B-
I was unable to finish, I don’t know if it was my
lack of appetite do to
just getting over being
very sick, or if the burrito was nasty, but I did not enjoy. They did not have black beans,
but they did say they offered whole beans. I asked for that, but it sure
tasted like I was given refried. The chips were complimentary, but they were
store bought. The pico salsa was not bad, however the
hot sauce tasted like tomato sauce. It was very nasty. The green stuff was like most green
salsa, obviously from a jar, and tasted
like snot.
Taquillas (No
Burrito
is decent, not authentic style, but low priced and a good size. Vegetarian
options are available, and they offer both black beans and whole beans. Chips
are store bought, but, complimentary. They are the good kind of store bought
chips though, thick & tasty. The homemade pico
style is good, so is the hot stuff. I didn’t try the others, but there were 3
other options. Service is quick, decent.
Taquillas # 2 (N. vasco
rd.,
Where
do I start? Burrito wasn’t bad if you like to taste nothing but lettuce. I
think I only spotted 2 or 3 beans inside my burrito. I didn’t taste any. They
only served whole beans and refried. I
wasn’t offered chips so I don’t know the chips and salsa situation. The prices
however,
Were pretty low. Ranged from $3.75 to about 5 dollars.
360* gourmet burritos (chain store, they are
everywhere) C
This one is more of an American style burrito
(another place run by white guys), under 5 bucks. Something about fresh, crisp
lettuce in a burrito that just does not do it for me. Lettuce needs to be
shredded in a burrito, big chunks just aren’t right. There are plenty of
vegetarian options available. They offer black beans but not whole beans. Chips
are store bought and they charge you. Salsa is from a can, and it was nasty.
The red stuff tastes like ketchup, and the green stuff tastes like snot.
Una Mas (chain, everywhere) B-
I like carrots, when I am at a party in a deli tray
with a bowl of ranch for dipping, however, in my burrito I don’t want them.
Once I picked out all the carrots out of my burrito at this place, it really
was actually pretty good. Chips were free, homemade and damn good. Salsa
however, was kind of on the yucky side. The fresca
was good, the ranchera tasted like barbecue sauce,
and the hot wasn’t even very hot. The veggie burrito was under 6 bucks, but
they do offer the “el cheapo” which is just beans, rice and salsa for under 4 bucks.
Velascos (
For the first time since creating
burritosareyummy.com, I did not order a burrito in a taqueria.
One look at the menu, I was like “screw that” $8.95 for a veggie. “I think I
will have a quesadilla” they did have free, homade
chips that were quite good and the salsa was just how I like it, (pico style a little bit runny and hot). The service was
also a bit slow. Maybe one day when I have the extra cash, I will go there
again and give it a chance at a better review. But not now.
Yunzas (fillmore st., SF) C+
This is actually a Peruvian café and Mexican grill.
The burrito was good but strange. I have had burritos with corn, and it wasn’t
horrible. This burrito however, had green peas in it. That was too weird for
me. It would have been much better without the peas. Burrito was under 6 bucks.
And service was friendly. Yes it came with chips, but no salsa. If you eat
there, you get salsa. I guess they just didn’t have to go cups for it or
something. Anyways, if you are looking for something strange, this is your
burrito. ……Update: this place is now under a different name and new owner. I
will update more when I can visit the place…
Zona rosa (Berkeley, SF) B-
Burrito wasn’t anything special, but it wasn’t bad.
They offered whole beans, no black and had a few vegetarian items on the menu.
They had store bought chips, but they were complimentary. The salsa was just OK. Basically, it’s not
disgusting.
